Lead Poisoning–What Increases The Risk?

Lead dust poisoning, cdc lead poisoning, lead poisoning soil, exposure

The use of lead was much in the houses constructed before 1978, say for painting, water piping etc. The children who are now staying in such houses are prone to lead poisoning. Such houses are being destroyed or renovated, causing much more danger because the atmosphere gets contaminated with lead vapors. The odor of the scrap paint also pollutes the air. The children playing in the debris containing lead pieces and particles have more physical contact with lead apart from inhaling the air mixed with lead vapors. Licking or chewing toys, jewellery, wooden items finished with lead oxide paint have every chance of getting affected. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has notified that many products from various countries contained high level of lead. The list is in their website ‘www.cpsc.gov’.
It is obvious that children belonging to the low income groups, immigrants, refugees etc are more likely to be the victims because they have more exposure to lead contaminated air, soil, dust, paint etc., especially while staying in their dwellings which were constructed long ago.
The children below the age of six have the risk. That is because of their natural tendency of touching, chewing or tasting every item they find. This may include paint chips and materials laden with lead. They may play in the dust containing lead. They may also inhale dusty air contaminated with lead. Certain children have the habit of eating whatever they get as though it is their food. They eat lead also. And they are bound to pay the penalty.
The growth of children depends to a considerable extend on their iron intake. Studies have revealed that when there is not enough iron in the body, there is more chance of lead to encroach the system. This results in retardation of physical, mental and intellectual growth. This makes it clear that children should never have iron deficiency.
The following are the causes for lead poisoning among adults.
It depends mainly on their work environment. For example, when they are remodeling something out of wood, they are sure to inhale lead based paint coated on its surface. Minute lead particles may stick on their body and clothes and get transferred to their houses, thus exposing others there.
Usage of the following, which contain lead: Cups or dishes of ceramic glazes, natural remedies and supplements, Cosmetics manufactured in certain. “Moonshine whiskey” made in southern states of USA.
