Lead Poisoning-Prevention
Lead poisoning emedicine, arsenic poisoning, lead poisoning symptoms
At the outset, arrange to remove the source of lead from the house or
workplace and then go in for a balanced diet.
Lead based paint is the most common source. Films of paint is easily peeled
off and thrown into the soil, contamimnating the soil. The paint particles
along with dust and debris are thrown here and there when old buildings
are demolished or renovated. Houses built earlier to 1950 have the highest
level of lead based paint. Even those built before 1978 have some amount
of such paint.
Toys and jewellery manufactured in some countries contain a bit of lead.In
2007, The United States Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) have
given the list of such items in their website ‘www.cpsc.gov.’
For the houses to be free from lead, you have to engage experts in the
job of cleaning. Cleaning includes wet mopping the floors, damp sponging
of walls, vacuumizing with a high efficiency vauum compressor etc.
There are recognised agencies to test the level of lead in the house.
The state or local health department can help you in locating them.
There are other sources of lead such as:
Jobs in industries dealing in lead, hobbies with exposure to lead, certain
medicines and cosmetics, leaded crystal, lead- glazed pottery, vegetables
grown in lead contaminated soil, food stored in lead or lead soldered
cans, water from lead soldered copper pipes, pollluted air from lead smelters,
certain medicines and supplements and vitamins from india, ink used in
certain printing materials and certain vinyl plastic items such as mini-blinds
manufactured in certain countries earlier to 1996.
If your house is contaminated, thoroughly clean the floor, window sills,
door frames etc. Mop with warm soap water twice a week. The same traeatment
should br given to toys and other articles.
If drinking water is contaminated, in the early morning, keep the tap
open for a few minutes and drain the water. Use the water for drinking
and cooking only after that.
Everyone in the house should have a healthy balanced diet. Sufficient
intake of iron, calcim, zinc, phosphorous, vitamins etc will prevent lead
from entering thr body. Ensure that the children are taken care of well
in this respect.
If you are working in an industry dealing in lead or if your hobby is
with lead, you have every chance to get poisoned. The company has to ensure
that you are taken care of. You should not transfer the menace to your
house. You should prevent the lead particles to be transported to the
house through your body, dresses, shoes etc. Preferably you can have a
bath in the workspot itself and change your apparels there.
Your food habits will help in prevention to a great extend. Go for a healthy
balanced diet. If you keep you stomach full by having frequent meals or
snacks, that will prevent the attack as lead is not easily absorbed when
the stomach isa full.
Do not take high fat diets. High fat dietsa will absorb more lead
